World Whistleblowers Day
June 23 is World Whistleblower Day. This is a reminder of the importance of speaking up and listening.
In too many workplaces, silence is mistaken for trust, when it often signals fear, distrust, or futility. I’ve seen the damage that silence can cause and the courage it takes to speak up in environments that don’t make it easy.
No complaints isn’t always a good sign. In my experience, it often means people don’t trust you to listen, or don’t believe anything will change.
The cost of speaking up in Australia is still too high: Fear of job loss. Fear of reputational damage. A deeply ingrained “no dobbing” culture. Yes, stronger protections are coming with a new federal Whistleblower Protection Authority Bill currently under consultation. But regulation alone won’t fix what culture ignores.
If your organisation claims integrity as a value, it’s time to live it.
· Promote a culture where concerns are welcomed.
· Where whistleblowers are protected and praised, not punished.
· Where speaking up is seen as loyalty, not betrayal.
That’s integrity in action.
The greatest risk isn’t the complaint. It’s the silence.
